Choosing the Right Type of Wire/Steel Fencing

The wide choice of wire and steel fencing options can meet a range of agricultural, commercial or residential requirements. Whether it is keeping animals in, or unwanted visitors out, wire and steel fences are strong, durable and low maintenance. There is plenty of choice here at W L West & Sons, so read on as we explain the differences and help you decide on the option of fence that best meets your needs.

How to Choose the Right Steel or Wire Fencing

Choosing the right steel or wire fencing involves several crucial considerations to ensure that it meets your specific needs. At W L West & Sons, we're experts in helping our clients find the right steel or wire fencing for their project.

Determine your priorities

The first thing to determine is the purpose of the steel wire fencing - whether it's for security, containment, or aesthetic purposes, or a combination of all the above. With over 7 types of steel wire fencing available, it's worth spending time exploring all options and for this you need to determine your priorities. For example, Chainlink fencing is perfect for sports pitches and leisure facilities due to its strength and versatility, while railings are more aesthetically pleasing on the eye and are therefore a better choice for residential properties. Knowing your purpose and your fencing priorities are key.

Consider whether you'd like galvanised, plastic-coated or powder-coated finish

If you have specific preferences about the look of your steel or wire fencing, you'll want to consider the finish. Some types of steel wire fencing are only available in a galvanised finish, such as traditional wire fencing, while other types of fencing can be plastic-coated or powder-coated.

Explore all options

There are so many options available for steel or wire fencing and it can be challenging to know where to start. From steel palisade fencing to plain wire fencing, it's essential you know the differences so you can find the right type for your upcoming project. Keep reading to explore the different types of steel fencing available.

7 Main Types of Steel Wire Fencing

Plain Wire Fencing

An economic, strong and durable fencing solution that is perfect for agricultural fencing.

Used to control livestock, plain wire fencing is great for fencing across long distances. All wire is galvanised steel with a zinc coating to help it withstand the elements, resist rust and corrosion and remain strong for a long lifespan.

Galvanised stock fence

A heavy-duty wire fence, galvanised stock fencing forms a high tensile barrier capable of enclosing large livestock. It can be attached to post and rail or cleft rail fencing to provide a quick, practical, cost-effective and attractive solution. Fencing is available in different heights and hole sizes and can be used for fences with gradual turns and/or backed by hedges.

Chainlink Fencing

Chainlink fencing is a strong and versatile product and is used extensively for sports pitches and leisure facilities, industrial units, animal enclosures or any premises requiring security. It comes either galvanised or plastic coated and is usually erected to either concrete or steel angle posts (although timber posts can be used if preferred), with the option of barbed wire extensions as a deterrent to intruders.

The reason chain link fencing is so popular is mostly due to its relative low cost and the ease of installation. Being a transparent style of fence, it does not block out sunlight, and the open style makes it ideal for particularly windy and exposed areas.

Chainlink can be supplied and erected in a range of heights from 0.9m high for domestic use, to 2.4m high with barbed wire extensions for complete anti-intruder security. Heights can be increased to 3.6m high for ball courts and sports pitches. At PRO Fencing, security gates can be made to order to suit any opening and erected along with the fencing by our fully trained installation teams. All fencing will be erected to BS1722 Part 1 by PRO Fencing, with variations to suit the customer.

Weldmesh Fencing

Weldmesh fencing is a good alternative to chainlink. The see-through fencing is slightly more robust in its construction and is often used as perimeter fencing around sports grounds, office buildings and schools. Supplied galvanised, it can be plastic coated in a variety of colours.

Railings

Steel railings form a smart and sturdy boundary fence and are especially popular in residential settings. Made in panels, they can be supplied in various heights, either with a galvanised finish or powder coated in a range of attractive colours. The panels have many different finishes to the tops of the railings; including: bow topped, interlaced bow top, spiked, domed and blunt tops.

Steel Palisade Fencing & Gates

Steel palisade fencing is constructed of galvanised steel to BS729, and can be powder coated in a variety of colours. Various heights are available, but triple pointed tops are not recommended on fences lower than 1.8m due to the possibility of accidental injury to passers-by. This type of fencing provides a good secure boundary and is used in many locations requiring high levels of security.

Ball Court Systems & Sports Grounds

Ball court fencing systems are usually constructed of a lower re-bound powder coated panels, topped with an overlap of weldmesh fence that can either have galvanised or powder-coated finish. There are three standard heights – 2.7, 3.0 and 3.6m.
