Does Acoustic Fencing Really Work?

In an increasingly noisy world, finding peace and quiet has become a priority for homeowners. From the constant hum of traffic from busy roads, noisy construction and industrial sites, school playgrounds and even chatter from nearby neighbours.

Exposure to excessive noise levels above 55 decibels can significantly impact our health and wellbeing. This is where high quality acoustic fencing comes in promising to reduce unwanted noise pollution and promote a more peaceful environment - but does acoustic fencing really work?

What is Timber Acoustic Fencing?

Acoustic fencing, also known as noise reduction fencing, is specifically designed to absorb and/or reflect unwanted external noise. It can be installed in a range of settings, including industrial, commercial and leisure environments, to mitigate the impact of noise pollution on nearby residential areas.

How do Acoustic Fence Panels Work?

Reflective Acoustic Fence Panels

Designed to reflect sound waves away from the protected area, these are the most common type of acoustic barriers, ideal for locations where noise originates from elevated sources like railways or busy roads.

Absorptive Acoustic Fence Panels

These acoustic barriers absorb sound waves, making them particularly effective for reducing noise in  high-traffic and noisy areas.

Combination Acoustic Fence Panels

These acoustic barriers feature a reflective side facing the noise, and an absorptive side toward the protected area. This premium option provides the most significant reduction in noise pollution.

How is Acoustic Fencing Different from Standard Timber Fencing?

Standard timber fencing generally has a mass of about 4 KG per square metre and features some gaps between the slats, making it ineffective as an acoustic barrier. In contrast at PRO Fencing, our acoustic fencing is roughly twice as thick as traditional timber fencing at 38mm compared to 19mm.

Materials

The reflective style fence is composed of 100% pressure-treated softwood, while absorptive or combination barriers may incorporate materials like mineral wool, composite materials, or fibreglass.

Design

Acoustic fences are made from solid, tightly fitting tongue and groove boards, with a tightly fitting or integral gravel board, and specialised fitted posts to minimise gaps between panels for sound to travel through. They’re available in a range of heights, often higher than standard timber fencing, to improve noise reduction and security.

Cost

Due to the additional materials and the complexity of construction, acoustic fence panels cost per metre are generally more expensive to purchase and install than standard fencing.

How Effective is Acoustic Fencing at Blocking Sound?

There are several factors that will influence the effectiveness of acoustic fencing in reducing noise, including the density, thickness and height of the fence, as well as your distance from the barrier and the distance of the noise source. Timber acoustic fencing can reduce outside sound by more than 25 decibels, which is a significant impact when considering that road traffic noise typically ranges between 45 and 70 decibels. Adding a row of hedging or trees in front of your acoustic fence can further enhance noise reduction.

If you’re uncertain about the noise levels on your property, consulting an acoustic engineer or surveyor can provide insight into the type and positioning of acoustic fencing necessary for your property.

Is Acoustic Fencing Secure?

Our timber acoustic fences feature a flat face with no horizontal rails, which makes them difficult to climb. The 38mm thickness of the fencing makes it durable and difficult to break through. With no gaps in the fencing, and the greater height of some acoustic fencing, you can enjoy increased privacy and enhanced security.
