Ash, European Fraxinus excelsior
A beautiful native British hardwood, Ash is valued for its strength and shock-resistance, as well as its creamy to golden colouring with attractive olive/brown streaks, indeed, it is rare not to have colour in the heartwood. Knots are uncommon and grain patterns can be visually stunning. Due to its large vessel structure, Ash can be stained without losing the grain and texture of the wood. It is able to accept colour evenly without any patchiness.
Ash has traditionally been used for furniture making. As Ash takes impact well (with a hardness rating of 1,320 lb across the grain in crush tests), it is a popular choice for flooring and is also commonly used for doors, staircases, timber frames and other interior joinery because of its high resistance to wear. Sadly, Ash Die Back will have a major impact on availability in the next 5-10 years, as it is predicted we will lose 85% of our native ash trees to this devastating disease.

Our Ash is carefully selected and is generally prime grade with minimal knots. This grade is mainly used for joinery and furniture applications. Ash is generally sold colour no defect (CND).

Nails well but pre-drilling is recommended to avoid splitting.
