European Alder (Alnus glutinosa)

European alder tends to be light tan to reddish brown; colour darkens and reddens with age. There is no visible distinction between heartwood and sapwood. Large aggregate rays appear as occasional small streaks on the face grain that can be mistaken for defects in the wood.

European alder is very easy to work with both hand and machine tools; it sands easily. The wood is rather soft, however, and care must be taken to avoid denting it in some applications. European alder has excellent gluing, staining, and finishing properties; it also turns well.

Our Alder is homegrown in Britain.

Our turning blanks are carefully selected by our expert staff. The quality control inspection ensures our blanks are split and shake free. Every blank has hot wax applied to the end grain and edges to prevent end splitting through the drying process. This ensures your finished object will be stable when brought into a centrally heated environment. With a range of shapes and sizes, we are sure you will find something to stimulate your creativity and inspire your next project.
